Une méthode efficace pour gérer les altises et punaises du chou !

Les altises et les punaises du chou sont, aux côté des piérides et de la mouche du chou des insectes qui causent beaucoup de dégâts. Mais si les deux derniers ont des solution simples à mettre en œuvre (ramassage, traitement au BT…), ce n’est pas le cas pour les deux première que seule la mise en place de filets anti insectes lors de l’implantation de la culture permet de réguler. Mais cette implantation peut vite s’avérer coûteuse et fastidieuse dès que vous avez de nombreuses rangées de choux au jardin. En plus il faut surveiller que le vent ne les emporte ou que les choux ne touchent le filet (pas trop gênant pour l’altise mais la punaise, elle, peut piquer à travers le filet en cas si les feuilles touchent l’intérieur de celui-ci).

J’avais déjà évoqué la question de ces insectes en 2022 avec l’utilisation de Brassicacées qui attirent plus ces insectes que nos choux en me basant sur ma propre expérience et sur des résultats du GRAB.

Je voudrais aujourd’hui vous parler d’une autre solution qui ne nécessite aucun achat supplémentaire, il s’agit d’une association que je teste avec succès depuis 2020, qui consiste à mettre les choux au milieu des pommes de terre pour les protéger contre les altises et les punaises du chou.

Petit historique de mon expérience de cette association

En 2020, j’avais fait cela de manière tout à fait fortuite en plantant un peu par hasard deux plants de choux de Bruxelles au milieu des pommes de terre. J’ai alors eu la surprise de constater que ces deux plants ont été exempt de punaises du chou alors que les autres plants en étaient infestés.

J’ai retesté cette association en 2021 mais la météo de cette année là a fait que la pression des altises et des punaises était faible, j’ai eu de magnifiques radis totalement indemnes alors qu’ils n’étaient pas associés, donc difficile de confirmer les observations de 2020.

En 2022, j’ai implanté très eu de choses au printemps car j’étais en plein déménagement ponctué de nombreux déplacements professionnels, de sorte que ce n’est qu’en 2023 et 2024 que j’ai pu tester à nouveau l’association sur des parcelles de choux et là l’effet a été très net, malgré la présence importante d’altises et de punaises sur des Brassicacées (radis roses, radis chinois, roquette, choux, navets…) éloignées des pomme de terre, tout les plants situés au milieu de cette culture subissaient une pression très légère.

Comment je l’utilise aujourd’hui ?

Cette observation semble bien se renouveler d’année en année, de sorte que maintenant je prévois d’installer les choux au milieu des pommes de terre, à raison d’un rang de choux pour 2 rangs de pomme de terre, cette année, les choux en question sont : chou de Milan, choux de Bruxelles et chou rave.

Lorsque je pratique cette association, je mets d’abord en place les pommes de terre (je précise que ce sont des pommes de terre sous foin donc non butées, ce qui est plus pratique pour associer la pomme de terre à d’autres légumes) et je réserve les rangs pour les futurs emplacements de choux avec des bâtons pour bien les repérer. Je les repique ensuite dès que les premières feuilles de pomme de terre dépassent du paillage.

Implantation des plants de choux au milieu des pommes de terre le 4 juin dernier. les pommes de terre avaient été plantées le 18 mai et commencent tout juste à sortir à ce moment. on voit nettement ici l’alternance de 2 rangs de pommes de terre puis 1 rang de choux.

Malgré ces précautions, la pousse de la pomme de terre étant très dynamique en fin de de printemps début d’été, il y a un moment où j’ai l’impression que mes choux vont être complètement étouffé par la végétation de leur voisine. Mais c’est oublier que cette dernière a un cycle beaucoup plus court que les seconds. Très vite la croissance du feuillage des pommes de terre se réduit, les doryphores, voire le mildiou se chargent même de les éclaircir et les choux, de leur côté, continuent tranquillement leur croissance et dominent sans problème la parcelle à la fin de l’été.

Début juin 2023 : les mois de mai et juin ont été très humide cette année là et la pousse des pousse des pommes de terre a été fulgurante ! Celles-ci, implantées tout début mai semblent écraser nos pauvres choux implantés vers le 20 mai…
Mais sur la même parcelle au 26 juillet, tout est rentré dans l’ordre, les pommes de terre commencent à s’étoiler et les choux reprennent le dessus sans avoir été pénalisés par l’ombre de leurs compagnes de parcelle.

Qu’entends-je lorsque je partage mon observation ?

Je me risque du coup de plus en plus à partager cette observation lors de mes conférences ou en discutant avec d’autres jardiniers. La plupart du temps cela semble une découverte pour mes interlocuteurs, à quelques exceptions près qui me disent avoir vu cela chez quelque vieux jardinier. J’ai eu toutefois une surprise récemment en échangeant à ce sujet avec un ami maraîcher malien qui semblait connaître parfaitement cela et m’a indiqué que lui-même pratique cela qu’au Mali tout le monde fait cela justement dans le but de protéger les choux contre les altises et les punaises.

Les questions que cela pose

Si je suis de plus en plus affirmatif au sujet de la validité de cette association, je n’ai aucune explication de pourquoi cela marche, de sorte qu’on pourrait tester d’autres association dans le but de protéger les choux des altises et des punaises. Peut-être que toutes solanacées fonctionnent ? Est-ce quelqu’un a testé les choux au milieu des tomates, des aubergines, ou encore des physalis si rustiques et délicieuses ? peut être aussi que d’autres plantes pourraient fonctionner. A ce stade je n’ai aucune idée desquelles mais il y a certainement plein d’expériences à faire.

Et aussi la question que l’on me pose presque systématiquement lorsque je parle de cette association : est ce que les choux protègent les pommes de terre contre les doryphores et là la réponse est clairement non, pas plus que contre le mildiou ! Toutefois, je soupçonne que les pommes de terre bénéficient de l’association car je porte plus de soins à l’implantation des choux en termes d’arrosage et de fertilisation qu’à celle des pommes de terre et il est vraisemblable que ces dernières bénéficient notamment de la fertilisation apportée aux choux. Chez moi cette fertilisation consiste en un arrosage régulier d’urine sur le rang de choux.

On peut aussi se poser la question concernant les autres Brassicacées : radis, navets, roquette… J’ai essayé ce printemps de semer un rang de roquette au milieu des pommes de terre et le résultat a été assez décevant avec une culture infestée d’altises, ce qui suggère que cette association n’est pas suffisante pour des plantes très attractive pour les altises, comme la roquette, les radis chinois… donc pour l’instant je me contente d’évoquer cette association pour les choux uniquement.

En tous cas, pour finir, je dirais que l’on tient là une piste très prometteuse pour gérer les punaises du chou et les altises pour lesquels il n’y a aucun moyen de lutte véritablement efficace mis à part la pose préventive et assez contraignantes de filets anti insectes !
